About Geological Survey of India:
Geological Survey of India, established in 1851, is a premier earth science organisation in
the country. It has very well established offices spread over the entire length and breadth of the
country having more than 2500 professional geoscientists and modern laboratory facilities.
Geological Survey of India has made significant contributions to Nation building by providing
basic earth science information to the government, industry and public.
Geological Survey of India carved out GSI Training Institute (GSITI) in 1976 to impart
Basic, Refresher and Advanced trainings in Mapping, Mineral exploration and on issues of
societal relevance like Landslides, Disaster management, Medical geoscience and Environmental
studies to geoscientists of GSI and others.
GSI TI has its main training centre at Hyderabad. Presently, the institute has Regional
Training Institutes (RTI) one each in the regional headquarters of GSI and ten field centres viz,
Aizwal, Bhimtal, Kuju, Kothagudem, Raipur, Zawar, Saketi , Salem, Baula and Chitradurga with
a view to impart training in regional geology. The specialised divisions such as Photogeology and
Remote sensing (PGRS), Geophysics and the Centre for Geoinformation Management Training
(CGMT) are located at Hyderabad.
The GSITI will be awarding Post PG diploma in Geoinformatics in collaboration with
Osmania University which is a UGC recognised and NAAC accredited University. Osmania
University is a multifaculty and multidisciplinary university known for its excellent academic
achievement and has established “University-Industry hub” for its effective interface between
academia and industry. GSI TI envisions to fill the gap between academic knowledge and field
practices and in due course of time proposes to provide varied courses for postgraduate students
of Geosciences of the country to enable them to use the state of the art techniques of Exploration,
Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics for Disaster Management.
